Sport Tire Review

I've been taking notes on each tire I buy for each bike. It helps me to dial in for best feel and price. There are subtle differences between the inlines and twins in regards to wear and mileage. Thought I'd share my notes for others as well as provide the calculated Mile Per Dollar vs perfomance of the tires in the following posts.

I've also added a bang for your buck calculator since tire prices change so much. Select the specific tire, input the price you can get it for and this calculator will average the mileage previously obtained through testing and return you a bang for the buck figure. then compare this to others below.

Re: Sport Tire Review

I just finished off my Battlax BT016 Front Tire so it was time to add it to the master Tire Review reference list. While each of these tires had its own little quirks and unique characteristics, none of them were spectacularly superior in handling over the next until they were close to the wer bars. While the rear mileage is listed for the Bridgstone BT021, it is not yet finished off, nor is it going to come anwhere near to beating the Road 2 for longevity.  We've been talking about bang for the buck when it comes to tires, so I dropped all this in a spreadsheet and created a pivot table which calculates dollars per mile for each tire and sorts it in order of most miles per dollar!  Here is the result!

...

Not to keep you in suspense... but theres a bug in this page thats not fixed yet! wink

Scroll Down.....

Miles Per Dollar
ManufacturerSpecific ModelFrontRearOverall Average
Michelin 392833
Pilot Power422634
Road 2 2CT 3333
Pilot Power 2CT361930
Bridgestone322126
Battlax BT 01632 26
Battlax BT 0212126
Pirelli 351826
Diablo351826
Overall Average372531

So there you have it, Michelin sweeps the Bang For the Buck (Miles Per Dollar) Eval by a healthy margin. Some interesting perspectives though on a tire by tire basis. The BT021 seems a better value over the Pirelli Diablo, Michelin 2CT and possibly even the Pilot Power rear tires which we'll find out once the final mileage comes in. .

Re: Sport Tire Review

what formula did you use to get the dollar per mile? i made a spread sheet a few weeks ago and id like to add that.

would it be total mileage/cost of tire?

Re: Sport Tire Review

Yep

if A=cost of tire
and B = mileage
and C = cost per mile
and 1 is the first row

C1=B1/A1

Re: Sport Tire Review

The math gets interesting from there. Assuming you drive 25,000 miles a year, running a Pilot Power Front instead of a BT016 would save you $186.00, and the Road 2 instead of the BT021 would save $441.00.  So thats an extra $627 in cash just for running Michelins... basicly two complete extra sets of tires per year. So even if you dont like how they get when close to the wear bars, you could always change them early and still be saving money!  Food for thought!

Re: Sport Tire Review

I'm actually quite interested in the 120/65 in the hopes that it is the inherent middle ground... but it will most likely be applied on a bike by bike basis. For instance, my Falco cannnot make full use of a 120/70 michelins edges, there remains almost 1/2" of unused edge, and the resulting profile difference requires more countersteer. The 120/70 Battlax leaves only 1/4" of unused edge, half as much and requires less countersteer due to the more gradually rounded profile.  When I run a 120/60 on the Falco, I clearly run right to the edge, but I do not know if I'm running over or just reaching the edge and it requires no countersteer, sometimes a little push into the corner like the diablos.  Logically, I would assume the 120/65 to be right in the middle, making the most use of the entire surface of the tire at hopefully the most nuetral feel.  Now your F4i seemed to really respond well to the 120/70 on turn in, so perhaps not using the entire surface is less important in order to maintain steering nuetrality.

BTW: I would keep your back tire and swap to a different front tire, perhaps the pilot power. The bt021 is fantastic in the wet, dry and corners under power.  It's only real downfall is related to the excessive amounts of rubber that constantly ballup and peal off the edges.

Re: Sport Tire Review

Added a bang for the buck calculator on tires from which I have a history on. This way, as prices change or some spectacular deal comes about, you can test it for Bang for the Buck / Miles Per Dollar against everything listed.

Added Current Deals Calculator
